What happens in a Halloween zombie video

BeatWhat you see
The survivorNight in the pumpkin field. One of you holds a gun, in tears.
The faceA close-up of the one who turned: grey skin, clouded eyes, still the same face.
The choiceThe gun goes down. Arms open.
The runThe zombie sprints between the pumpkins and leaps.
The cutMid-air, a hard cut to a warm day: the two of you in the same field, laughing.

The cold part takes most of the video, and the warm memory closes it. It is tender, not scary. No shot is fired, and nobody is hurt.

Three scenes for Halloween and Day of the Dead

Pumpkin field

A dark, empty pumpkin patch at night, then a sunny afternoon picking pumpkins. The pick for a Halloween post.

Marigolds

Candles and orange marigold flowers at night, then a warm day together. Made for Day of the Dead on November 1 and 2. The scene uses flowers and candles, not face paint.

Classic

A ruined city with drifting ash, then a golden wheat field at sunset. The look of the original trend, for any time of year.

Every scene costs the same and runs 15 seconds.

Halloween in numbers

The National Retail Federation survey of 22 September 2026 asked 7,889 consumers between September 1 and 9. It found that 74% plan to celebrate Halloween, against 73% last year, and that the average planned spend is 115.14 dollars per person, against 114.45 dollars in 2025.

Costumes are the biggest line: 71% of shoppers plan to buy one, for 4.4 billion dollars, and dressing in costume is one of the top ways people mark the day, at 50%. That is the group a no-makeup video is for. Pets are in the count too. NRF expects 0.92 billion dollars on pet costumes, and a pumpkin is the most popular one at 11.6%, which suits the Pumpkin field scene with a dog or a cat.

People also plan with AI: 47% of consumers use AI tools for Halloween shopping, with brainstorming ideas (34%) and asking for recommendations (32%) on top. The figures are for the United States and are NRF's forecast, not a count of purchases.

Where Halloween and Day of the Dead come from

The Library of Congress says Halloween had its beginnings in an ancient, pre-Christian Celtic festival of the dead called Samhain. HISTORY adds that the Celts, who lived 3,000 years ago in Central and Western Europe, celebrated their new year on November 1, and that on the night of October 31 they believed the ghosts of the dead could return to earth. The evening before All Saints Day became known as All Hallows Eve, or simply Halloween.

Day of the Dead is a related but different holiday. UNESCO lists it as an indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead, inscribed in 2008, in which families lay flower petals, candles and offerings for the returning souls. HISTORY says it is celebrated each year from October 31 to November 2, and that altars are decorated with candles and bright marigolds called cempasúchil. The Marigolds scene uses exactly those two things.

Zombie filter or zombie video: what you get

A zombie filter gives you a photo

Filter apps turn one selfie into a zombie portrait. That is one still image of one person.

This gives you a short story

Two people, or you and your pet, a run and a cut to a memory, with sound. We do not make single filter photos. If you want to try the look on one photo first, our zombie makeup ideas page has prompts for image tools.

Turn your Halloween photos into a video

You do not need a costume photo. Everyday photos work best: one person per photo, face clear, good light. The AI adds the grey skin and clouded eyes to the one who turns and keeps the face recognisable.

If you already have a Halloween photo you love, post it as the next slide after the video. JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC work, up to 10 MB each.

Couples Halloween video ideas

The no-makeup couples costume

Post it as "our costume this year". One of you is the zombie, and neither of you painted anything.

Both ways round

Make one where you turn and one where your partner turns. Post them a day apart.

The party teaser

Post the hosts' video a few days before your Halloween party, with the date in the caption.

The October anniversary

If your anniversary falls near Halloween, the memory at the end does the work.

Caption ideas

  • "Our couples costume took zero makeup."
  • "Trick or treat? Hug."
  • "The only monster I'd let in."
  • "Pumpkin season, end-of-the-world edition."
